This turn-key system includes everything needed for accurate survey grade depth and elevation acquisition (Except a GNSS base), including delivery, one day on on-site training at client location, dual sonars, processing software, an Emlid RS2 Dual Band GNSS Rover (PPK/RTK Capable), a transport case and more detailed below. Our goal is to equip you with what is needed to get the actionable, quality data you need. This is a comprehensive package. If you have your own equipment and need a boat, contact us. The HarborScout USV is a small to mid-sized Unmanned Survey boat which features an excellent blend of portability and capability. It features an 6 hour endurance, can carry multiple payloads simultaneously including single beam, sidescan and traditional survey GNSS rovers – all in a size which can easily fit in the bed of a pickup, in the trunks of some cars and can be carried by a single person using the side handles.  The HarborScout is a perfect choice for frac pit volumetrics, tailing ponds, lakes, bays and other small to medium sized bodies of water.

Convenient Size, Excellent Capability...
The HarborScout TK comes loaded with a comphensive payload suite, features a full autopilot making data collection easier than ever. Mission Planning can be learned in a few hours and comes down to selecting a polygon area, specifying the transect separation which will auto-generate the waypoint path. Once wirelessly uploaded to the boat, the operator simply switches to automatic mode and observes as the HarborScout precisely executes the mission, ideally from the comfort of a vehicle with heat or A/C using the included bridged LAN. The HarborScout also includes an R/C transmitter for manual control when needed. A toggle switch controls operational modes, allowing the operator to switch from manual to auto or back at anytime, making the boat as easy to operate as an R/C toy. The operator may also direct/redirect the boat at anytime by selecting a location on the on-screen map to which to navigate.

Autopilot - As easy or as powerful as you want…
The HarborScout comes equipped with an industry leading autopilot system complete with gyros, accelerometers and multi-GNSS based navigation - it is capable of executing complex waypoint based scripted missions.  But it also has an R/C controller making it as simple to use as a toy R/C boat. Operators may make use of a laptop, plan complex missions, operate it by selecting points on a map in real time – or show up at the job site, toss it in the water and drive by hand – the choice is yours – the automatic capabilities are controlled by a single toggle switch. However, unlike drone aircraft, a mistake doesn’t typically cost $1000s  - so the cost of learning the autopilot system is low.

 

Bridged LAN Wireless Data…
The HarborScout TK is equipped with a wireless bridged LAN data link.  This high-bandwidth connection allows onboard equipment to connect via ethernet and wifi and creates a Wifi access point on the shore which allows a seamless connection for onboard and shore-side equipment. This link can be used for real time sonar return monitoring, video, ReachView (including RTK corrections.) Additionally, full telemetry is available through the LAN, allowing observation of the current position overlaid on a map, pitch/roll, battery status, depth, mission status and a wide array of custom parameters. In addition to observing real time data, operators may also redirect the boat, upload, change/update missions at anytime the boat is within range. Anything connected onboard can be accessed by connecting to the shoreside Wifi with a laptop of tablet.

Real Time Depth & Avoidance…
The HarborScout features real time on screen depth and will deviate to avoid running ground in auto mode – making your shoreline data acquisition much less stressful. We’ve been there done that. Slogging through muck to get USVs unstuck after they’ve run aground – and said this should be a thing of the past. The avoidance system works and greatly reduces run aground incidents.

Operational Components & Concepts

Have a few minutes and want some technical details about how this system works? Read on...The HarborScout packs an enormous amount of capability into a reasonably small portable unmanned platform. It is equipped with four primary components which are used together to obtain survey grade depths, elevations (as well as biomass and sidescan) with high confidence.

  • Emlid Reach RS2 Dual Band GNSS Receiver: A GNSS rover which will record observations in UBX format (easily converted to rinex as needed.) This can be used for post processing. Alternatively, the Emlid Reach RS2 also has a wide range of input/output options for RTK, including corrections via LoRa, Wifi, Bluetooth and cellular. See more here:  www.emlid.com
  • SimpleLogger:  Logs accurate time, cm level depths from the airmar, pitch roll, and latitude/longitude/height geo-location information. If the ReachRS2 is running in RTK mode, the geolocation will be cm level. If running in PPK mode, it can be combined with the post processed track information to achieve cm level location and elevations. The integrated IMU provides pitch and roll data. We don't advise using this to correct depths (because of topographical uncertainty anywhere except under the boat) but this is used to delete results outside your pitch/roll tolerances - at a 5hz rate there is plenty of room to remove data and still have excellent density.
  • Airmar Single Beam Sonar: Provides accurate depths to the SimpleLogger. This is an Airmar Echorange survey grade single beam 200khz echo-sounder.
  • Lowrance Elite 7TI2 with 3/1 Transducer: Having an echogram/water column view for survey jobs can be extremely valuable and unfortunately, the Airmar single beam only provides depths - though it does so at cm level accuracy. The Lowrance Elite 7TI2 serves as a second and independent set of "eyes" allowing for full confidence of the airmar depth data. It does this by providing a full water column view where objects which may throw off depths can be visually observed and corrected for, as well as a second depth number. It can also operate at a range of frequencies making it great for biomass/vegetation mapping, plus it includes sidescan for locating sunken items. The lowrance adds a lot of capability to the overall platform - but is not used as the primary sonar for bathy surveys on account of its wide beam angle and internal location format limitations preventing cm level coordinates from being saved regardless of input source. 

With all that in mind, the boat operation and data collection are seperate. You can run the boat in R/C or Auto mode, it doesn't matter - what does matter is that the equipment covers the body of water and is logging while doing so. The SimpleLogger will record its data in a text file. The ReachRS2 will save observations in UBX/Rinex. The Lowrance will save data in SL2 format. The first step, after data collection, is to post process your rover observations - this is typically done by using RTKLib and details are available here.However, if you have other survey software, the rinex should be compatible. The post processing process will provide a text file with accurate locations and heights in text format which get merged based on time-stamp with that from the SimpleLogger, providing cm level locations, gps height and depths. This data can be adjusted to meet your formatting needs for use in GIS applications - or direclty imported in Reefmaster, which will also accept the Lowrance's SL2 file. From there you can process the data into visually appealing contour maps, shape files and more. Reefmaster will show the track data and allow you to review the water column for any abnoramlities.
